Healing rituals for Black, Brown and POC folks
Real community gives a sense of home and supports us in who we are becoming - without barriers, judgements or trying to mould us in who we “should be”.
Last month we hosted our first IRL community workshop and held discussion space in collaboration with Envision East festival in Hackney. We held space to explore the notion of home, belonging, sacred rituals and healing practices for Black, Brown and POC folks.
Together we discovered the similarities between people of colour in how we re-root ourselves in sacred rituals, which bond us to our communities, culture and identity. Our diverse group shared heartfelt stories of sacred rituals and practices that have been healing to us. We also reflected on grounding and healing practices of:
✨Connecting to the Divine through daily prayers
✨Tactile experiences of braiding or oiling hair
✨Sharing ancestral knowledge with new found families
✨Experiencing joy and laughter without judgements
Young people of colour need healing spaces for self-exploration and self-transformation. We don’t need more space to consume stuff. We don't need more structures rooted in pleasure seeking. What we need are healing spaces for our communities that have equitable access to support and improve the wellbeing of people of colour - without being excluded, facing threat of discrimination or left out of resources. Not just for us, but the generations who must flourish and continue to share our stories.
We don’t just heal as individuals, we heal together in community.
